Levitan was one of the important representatives of 19th-century Russian critical realist art, in terms of landscape painting. Levitan had been sick with fatigue and went to Italy, Switzerland and France for a time to study and convalesce, and came into contact with the impressionist method of external light painting that was emerging in France, which had a certain influence on his change of painting style.
